Howth is a fishing village on a headland thirty minutes north of the city on the DART, with a cliff path to the Baily lighthouse and a harbour where seals wait for the fish market. It is the best cheap day in Dublin, and the boats from the harbour make it a good expensive one.

The boats

The cliff and lighthouse cruises run from the west pier and take about an hour. Ireland's Eye, the rock island off the harbour, has a Martello tower, a ruined church and, from April to July, puffins; the ferry crosses in fifteen minutes and leaves you there for an hour or two. The coastal tours
