The Penedès is fifty minutes west of Barcelona and is where cava comes from. The big houses, Codorníu and Freixenet, run their own cellar tours in cathedrals of Modernista brick; the small family estates are the ones the tours below take you to, by 4x4 through the vineyards. Most tours are a half day with lunch, and the full days add Montserrat, which is on the same road.
