Figueres is ninety minutes north of Barcelona, a market town that would have no reason to be visited except that Dalí was born there and built his theatre-museum in the burnt-out municipal theatre. It is the most-visited museum in Spain outside Madrid and Bilbao, it is strange in the way the paintings are strange, and it is worth the drive.

Cadaqués and Portlligat, where Dalí lived, are another hour on a mountain road, and the house is small and sells out, so the tours that include it book the slot for you. Girona is on the way and the tours pair it with Figueres; that is the sensible combination if you have one day. The train from Sants reaches Figueres in under an hour on the fast line, so the museum on its own does not need a tour.
